Pirates by Hannah Cage

Jean Laffite is New Orleans most noted pirate. It is unclear of where he is originally from or if Jean Laffite is his real name. Laffite was a wanted man with a bounty on his head. He preyed on shipping and sold smuggled slaves and merchandise. (1) In 1815 Laffite made a deal with Andrew Jackson who at the time was a soldier who was sent to protect New Orleans from the British in the War of 1812. Laffite offered Jackson flints and powder and 1,000 fighting men. Jackson reluctantly accepted Laffite’s offer and there was no doubt the British would have captured New Orleans if Jackson had not accepted. During the Battle of New Orleans, the British suffered many casualties, but Jackson lost only 13 men. As a result, President Madison pardoned Laffite and his men for their bravery. (1) (2)

Pirates Alley was created as a passageway through the French Quarter. This alley runs along the southwest side of the St. Louis Cathedral which is in the French Quarter. An old lamp post at the intersection at Pirates Alley and Cabildo Alley marks a historic spot. This lamp post marks the closest proximity of a church, a state building, and a bar anywhere in the world. (4)
